Waiting

 

Materials: iPad, Apple Pencil

Process: found sentence on book page and snapped a pic of it then uploaded it into my drawing app on my iPad, ibispaint. From there, I sketched inverted a little over a third of the page, making the split of dark and light. I sketched a skeleton of a tree out then used an alcohol brush tip to draw out the trunk and branches, using the same kind of method for the leaves/moss. 

Idea: I wanted to convey the image of hearing common advice of “being patient” and “waiting for the one” while also feeling like that those words don’t do anything. “But it had no effect” means that the advice isn’t working, because the person narrating has already fallen or falling. The tree is a willow tree, often seen with moss hanging from it, and this image symbolizes that the advice, if listened to, can grow into something beautiful later on, but since it doesn’t have an effect on the narrator, the seed of patience has not grown. I wanted to try a different technique with digital as well as a different coloring/shading method than I’m used to.

    We can really see the words on this one.
    This one is probably your weakest. I know you had little time but we need to be more sophisticated by bringing up the level of complexity. I also think the quotations need to go.

  Materials: Cardstock, oil pastels, book page Process: I sketched out the figure I wanted using a myself as a reference on the book page then enlarged it. Then, using an xacto knife, I cut away the inside of the figure and the words that are not boxed. Using oil pastels, I created many lines, curled and not, to create a geometric design similar to fire on black construction paper. I glued the enlarged page onto the black paper.  Idea: The image I wanted to convey was that this was a “beginning” stage of the pining story. The sentence “sparks flew all over” means that butterfly/heart skipping that comes with starting to like someone. Usually associated with that is fire, hence the geometrical look. I wanted to use the inside of the figure to symbolize that the “sparks” are felt inside. What the figure is holding is her finger for a butterfly to land on (also to symbolize the “butterflies in stomach” idea).

Progressing

 Materials: book pages, digital art, exacto knife Process: I found the sentence that I wanted to use and copied it onto a beige colored paper, then cut out all of the words save for those in the sentence and made a border using the exacto knife and a ruler to get straight edges. From there, I sketched out my design on paper and took a picture which I imported into a drawing app called ibisPaint on my iPad and drew the lineart and coloring on there for sharper lines and edges. I printed the image out, glued it onto a black background and then glued the cut out page on top.  Idea: to express the “narrator’s” journey through the process of liking someone, this is the change where they realize that it’s okay to be rejected and used this as a means to self reflect/grow self love or confidence. Hence the sentence “then he set about raising himself  and slowly he made progress.” The triskelion represents change and progress in Greek/Celtic culture and the hands are reach up for it, wanting to
