Reasoning


Materials: book page, ipad (ibispaint), exacto knife, glue
Process: I drew out the lines connecting the sentence I had found on one the book pages and then copied it onto bigger parchment colored paper. Using the exacto knife, I cut a border and around said lines so only the sentences were left. I sketched a design on my iPad using ibisPaint, lineart, and colored as well. 
Idea: I wanted to convey the message that matters of the heart/desire can overtake one’s mind, throwing all reason to the wind. The flower symbol represents Aphrodite, goddess of love, while the owl sitting on the branch represents Athena, goddess of wisdom/reason. The sentences “I understand that for years now, the heart wa dimly doing what he knew best. It was foolish, but it was magnificent. Don’t give the chance to reason” is simply what it means. The heart can feel many things and that’s what it knows best, but the mind makes the decisions. So, sometimes when you get to know someone and start liking them, the heart feels more than the mind can reason. It’s sometimes foolish to make decisions based on feeling, but it can also bring great happiness too. The mind will try to talk you out of feeling. The owl is faded more, symbolizing that love is what is in control, not reason.

  Materials: Cardstock, oil pastels, book page Process: I sketched out the figure I wanted using a myself as a reference on the book page then enlarged it. Then, using an xacto knife, I cut away the inside of the figure and the words that are not boxed. Using oil pastels, I created many lines, curled and not, to create a geometric design similar to fire on black construction paper. I glued the enlarged page onto the black paper.  Idea: The image I wanted to convey was that this was a “beginning” stage of the pining story. The sentence “sparks flew all over” means that butterfly/heart skipping that comes with starting to like someone. Usually associated with that is fire, hence the geometrical look. I wanted to use the inside of the figure to symbolize that the “sparks” are felt inside. What the figure is holding is her finger for a butterfly to land on (also to symbolize the “butterflies in stomach” idea).

 Materials: iPad, ibispaint, exacto knife  Process: After I put together the sentence from different words found on a book page, I copied it onto Manila paper. I used a exacto knife to cut out all other words other than the sentence seen using a straight edge ruler and two triangle rulers, one large and one small, to get straight lines. using a reference, I sketched out the rough design of the hand and flower, finalized said design and did lineart and flats. I glued the book page on top of the printed out digital artwork. Idea: following “Fraying,” Warning describes how the heart has caught onto how the narrator’s crush does not reciprocate their feelings and agrees with reason. “It is the warning and his heart knew” means that when one gets the sense that their crush does not like them in that way anymore, reason/logic warns the heart that there could be potential danger should they keep liking that person (danger being emotional hurt, etc). Waiting

  Materials: iPad, Apple Pencil Process: found sentence on book page and snapped a pic of it then uploaded it into my drawing app on my iPad, ibispaint. From there, I sketched inverted a little over a third of the page, making the split of dark and light. I sketched a skeleton of a tree out then used an alcohol brush tip to draw out the trunk and branches, using the same kind of method for the leaves/moss.  Idea: I wanted to convey the image of hearing common advice of “being patient” and “waiting for the one” while also feeling like that those words don’t do anything. “But it had no effect” means that the advice isn’t working, because the person narrating has already fallen or falling. The tree is a willow tree, often seen with moss hanging from it, and this image symbolizes that the advice, if listened to, can grow into something beautiful later on, but since it doesn’t have an effect on the narrator, the seed of patience has not grown.
