Closing


Materials: watercolor pencil, sharpie

Process: i found, once again, a sentence from many and drew connecting lines to the words of the sentence through the gaps of other words. I sketched out the hand using my own reference and colored the hand and door using watercolor pencil, as well as the background. I then went over the pencil lines of the connecting lines with sharpie and any border needed. I did not mean to use purple, I thought it was black, but I made it work by adding a shadow through the doorway with sharpie. I added butterflies on the doorway and thinner lines around the rest of the door.

Idea: the butterflies on the doorway symbolize change and I wanted to come almost full circle from my first piece which was reaching out towards something unknown yet hoping for something to help them. This time, the hand is almost in the same position but reaching towards something they know will be good: growth and change within themselves for the better. The “door opening” is the butterfly door, striving towards that growth and change. Closing the door symbolizes, metaphorically, not looking back at the feelings towards another and instead focusing on themself. I wanted to try a slightly different technique with the sharpie since I’ve been using thin sharpie for the connecting words and outline since I used the wrong color for the background. The thick sharpie is too bold and almost distracting.

  Materials: Cardstock, oil pastels, book page Process: I sketched out the figure I wanted using a myself as a reference on the book page then enlarged it. Then, using an xacto knife, I cut away the inside of the figure and the words that are not boxed. Using oil pastels, I created many lines, curled and not, to create a geometric design similar to fire on black construction paper. I glued the enlarged page onto the black paper.  Idea: The image I wanted to convey was that this was a “beginning” stage of the pining story. The sentence “sparks flew all over” means that butterfly/heart skipping that comes with starting to like someone. Usually associated with that is fire, hence the geometrical look. I wanted to use the inside of the figure to symbolize that the “sparks” are felt inside. What the figure is holding is her finger for a butterfly to land on (also to symbolize the “butterflies in stomach” idea).

 Materials: iPad, ibispaint, exacto knife  Process: After I put together the sentence from different words found on a book page, I copied it onto Manila paper. I used a exacto knife to cut out all other words other than the sentence seen using a straight edge ruler and two triangle rulers, one large and one small, to get straight lines. using a reference, I sketched out the rough design of the hand and flower, finalized said design and did lineart and flats. I glued the book page on top of the printed out digital artwork. Idea: following “Fraying,” Warning describes how the heart has caught onto how the narrator’s crush does not reciprocate their feelings and agrees with reason. “It is the warning and his heart knew” means that when one gets the sense that their crush does not like them in that way anymore, reason/logic warns the heart that there could be potential danger should they keep liking that person (danger being emotional hurt, etc).   Materials: iPad, Apple Pencil Process: found sentence on book page and snapped a pic of it then uploaded it into my drawing app on my iPad, ibispaint. From there, I sketched inverted a little over a third of the page, making the split of dark and light. I sketched a skeleton of a tree out then used an alcohol brush tip to draw out the trunk and branches, using the same kind of method for the leaves/moss.  Idea: I wanted to convey the image of hearing common advice of “being patient” and “waiting for the one” while also feeling like that those words don’t do anything. “But it had no effect” means that the advice isn’t working, because the person narrating has already fallen or falling. The tree is a willow tree, often seen with moss hanging from it, and this image symbolizes that the advice, if listened to, can grow into something beautiful later on, but since it doesn’t have an effect on the narrator, the seed of patience has not grown.
