Recalling

Image
Materials: book page, exacto knife, iPad (ibispaint) Process: cut paper, sketch, lineart, color, shading Idea: the three I’s on each hand and the yellow glow/center symbolizes Euphrosyne, the goddess of happiness and joy. The symbol in the middle with white symbolizes Kronos, the god of time. The sentence “he looked back along the way he had come, and this was better” means that when one has gotten over their crush or the one they pined over and moved on, they might look back and wonder why they pined for so long. Once they start loving themself, they realize that that love is way better.

Closing

Image
Materials: watercolor pencil, sharpie Process: i found, once again, a sentence from many and drew connecting lines to the words of the sentence through the gaps of other words. I sketched out the hand using my own reference and colored the hand and door using watercolor pencil, as well as the background. I then went over the pencil lines of the connecting lines with sharpie and any border needed. I did not mean to use purple, I thought it was black, but I made it work by adding a shadow through the doorway with sharpie. I added butterflies on the doorway and thinner lines around the rest of the door. Idea: the butterflies on the doorway symbolize change and I wanted to come almost full circle from my first piece which was reaching out towards something unknown yet hoping for something to help them. This time, the hand is almost in the same position but reaching towards something they know will be good: growth and change within themselves for the better. The “door opening” is the butter...

Warning

Image
Materials: iPad, ibispaint, exacto knife  Process: After I put together the sentence from different words found on a book page, I copied it onto Manila paper. I used a exacto knife to cut out all other words other than the sentence seen using a straight edge ruler and two triangle rulers, one large and one small, to get straight lines. using a reference, I sketched out the rough design of the hand and flower, finalized said design and did lineart and flats. I glued the book page on top of the printed out digital artwork. Idea: following “Fraying,” Warning describes how the heart has caught onto how the narrator’s crush does not reciprocate their feelings and agrees with reason. “It is the warning and his heart knew” means that when one gets the sense that their crush does not like them in that way anymore, reason/logic warns the heart that there could be potential danger should they keep liking that person (danger being emotional hurt, etc). The flower is a rhododendron which...

Reasoning

Image
Materials: book page, ipad (ibispaint), exacto knife, glue Process: I drew out the lines connecting the sentence I had found on one the book pages and then copied it onto bigger parchment colored paper. Using the exacto knife, I cut a border and around said lines so only the sentences were left. I sketched a design on my iPad using ibisPaint, lineart, and colored as well.  Idea: I wanted to convey the message that matters of the heart/desire can overtake one’s mind, throwing all reason to the wind. The flower symbol represents Aphrodite, goddess of love, while the owl sitting on the branch represents Athena, goddess of wisdom/reason. The sentences “I understand that for years now, the heart wa dimly doing what he knew best. It was foolish, but it was magnificent. Don’t give the chance to reason” is simply what it means. The heart can feel many things and that’s what it knows best, but the mind makes the decisions. So, sometimes when you get to know someone and start liking them, th...

Progressing

Image
Materials: book pages, digital art, exacto knife Process: I found the sentence that I wanted to use and copied it onto a beige colored paper, then cut out all of the words save for those in the sentence and made a border using the exacto knife and a ruler to get straight edges. From there, I sketched out my design on paper and took a picture which I imported into a drawing app called ibisPaint on my iPad and drew the lineart and coloring on there for sharper lines and edges. I printed the image out, glued it onto a black background and then glued the cut out page on top.  Idea: to express the “narrator’s” journey through the process of liking someone, this is the change where they realize that it’s okay to be rejected and used this as a means to self reflect/grow self love or confidence. Hence the sentence “then he set about raising himself  and slowly he made progress.” The triskelion represents change and progress in Greek/Celtic culture and the hands are reach up for ...

Burning

Image
Materials: lighter, paper, tape Process: I tore five pieces of paper to create a ripple effect. For every piece, I wet the edges where I wanted to burn with water and used a lighter to singe them. For some more texture, I wet holes in different places and burned around it. I then used the burnt edges as a sort of graphite and made the paper look more old.  Idea: “each willing with desire” is to convey the feeling when each person has a mutual attraction to the other. By using burnt edges and fire, it adds to the passion kind of feeling. Fire is most often associated with desire or passion, so I wanted to use a different technique to convey such.

Image
Materials: paper, lighter, book page Idea: “alone with desire” is the sentence, though not seen here. Often times, fire is associated with desire, so I decided to try out burning the edges of paper and burning holes for the words to stand out. Above is the layout I’ve been thinking. I might also make the paper look more aged, not just burned. The top right corner piece was my “sample” or tester, take make sure I know what I’m doing and doing it safely because fire is dangerous :D

Fraying

Image
Materials: watercolor pencil, sharpie, book page Process: found a sentence on a random book page, sketched out the rough design of the lines connecting words, enlarged and printed book page on larger cardstock, sketched out design of hand and rope, erased all words excluding found sentence to make the words I wanted to be seen more clearly, colored with water color pencils and really went around the words I picked out darker than the background, went over pencil markings with thin sharpie, added details to rope and hand. Idea: The sentence "his eyes watched for something else but that was not longer me" means that the "narrator" (ie, the person who is going through the journey) has been seeing signs that the person they like is no longer showing interest in them, if they had at all before. The rope is representing the narrator's connection/attraction to their person of interest, meaning that holding onto a feeling that is breaking. If you look closely, you can...

Waiting

Image
Materials: iPad, Apple Pencil Process: found sentence on book page and snapped a pic of it then uploaded it into my drawing app on my iPad, ibispaint. From there, I sketched inverted a little over a third of the page, making the split of dark and light. I sketched a skeleton of a tree out then used an alcohol brush tip to draw out the trunk and branches, using the same kind of method for the leaves/moss.  Idea: I wanted to convey the image of hearing common advice of “being patient” and “waiting for the one” while also feeling like that those words don’t do anything. “But it had no effect” means that the advice isn’t working, because the person narrating has already fallen or falling. The tree is a willow tree, often seen with moss hanging from it, and this image symbolizes that the advice, if listened to, can grow into something beautiful later on, but since it doesn’t have an effect on the narrator, the seed of patience has not grown. I wanted to try a different technique ...

Wishing

Image
Materials: watercolor pencil, book page, sharpie Process: found reference photo, sketched figure and snake out. Using the watercolor pencils, I colored the figure and snake.  Idea: I wanted to convey the message of wanting to know someone more even pining from afar. The sentence “how I envy those who knew you” means that, while loving from afar, you can’t get to know the person you want. Or, alternatively, as you get to know someone, there are always people who have known them longer. Given this, the person pining might be envious of that, wanting to know someone as well as that.

Beginning

Image
Materials: Cardstock, oil pastels, book page Process: I sketched out the figure I wanted using a myself as a reference on the book page then enlarged it. Then, using an xacto knife, I cut away the inside of the figure and the words that are not boxed. Using oil pastels, I created many lines, curled and not, to create a geometric design similar to fire on black construction paper. I glued the enlarged page onto the black paper.  Idea: The image I wanted to convey was that this was a “beginning” stage of the pining story. The sentence “sparks flew all over” means that butterfly/heart skipping that comes with starting to like someone. Usually associated with that is fire, hence the geometrical look. I wanted to use the inside of the figure to symbolize that the “sparks” are felt inside. What the figure is holding is her finger for a butterfly to land on (also to symbolize the “butterflies in stomach” idea).

Remembering

Image
Materials: watercolor pencil, sharpie, cardstock Process: I drew a sketch of the hands and basic outline of the water flow, then colored in with water color pencil, adding water to create a smoother texture, using pressure to make certain areas darker or lighter. After it dried, I went back over a few areas to give it more depth in the water and flowers. Then I outlined the lines made in pencil with sharpie to make the figure stand out and more defined.  Idea: The sentence "he was in every moment" symbolizes the point at which one has become friends with someone they like and when going through recent memories, they see them in every moment, whether that be because something reminded them of that someone, or they saw something they would like, or they created memories with them. Poppies symbolize remembrance and memories as does the flow of water.

Blinding

Image
Materials: book pages, iPad editing using ibispaint, colored pencils Process: picked out words from book page, edited it and sketched on ibisPaint on my iPad, copied from iPad image, blacked out/colored the figure, leaving the sentence "the only fear was of blind foolish thinking" out to read. Idea: The idea here I wanted to bring together is that liking someone can lead to your judgment to be clouded. You might disregard any flaw the person could have and only see the good. That's how I interpret the sentence "the only fear was of blind foolish thinking." The figure seen is of Aite, the greek goddess of infatuation, blind folly, delusion, and rash action. I believed her to be fitting for the concept here. The eye above her head is a design to symbolize "blindness," furthering the blind thinking idea.

SI 2 Progress Check

Image
Materials: book pages, iPad editing using ibispaint Process: I found the words I wanted from the book page, boxed them out, and took a picture of it to then export it to my iPad where I can edit more freely without messing up the actual page. I then sketched out a design and colored it (as seen above). I copied and pasted the words on the top most layer so the words are seen.  Idea: The idea here I wanted to bring together is that liking someone can lead to your judgment to be clouded. You might disregard any flaw the person could have and only see the good. That's how I interpret the sentence "the only fear was of blind foolish thinking." Falling

Image
Materials: colored pencils, white marker, markers Process: I first started out with watercolor, but then soon realized that it would take too long and it didn't create the effect I really wanted. So, I moved on to markers and they worked a lot better, but with the marker streaks, it looked almost messy. Then, I finally decided to stick with colored pencils which allowed me to create an assortment of blue hues.  Idea: With this piece, I wanted to show the feeling of being in the phase of "I really like you but I'm not really going to do anything about it and just go with the flow, no matter how much it hurts." A suffocating feeling, isn't it?
